Did you know that ancient civilizations put wheels on their toys but never used the wheel for work or transportation?!  My 7th graders thought this was super interesting too.  Using these as inspiration, they made their own wheeled toys out of clay.

A wheeled toy from Mesoamerica

The animals were made with two pinch pot bodies {stuffed with newspaper}.  Holes were poked with a straw all the way through.  I made sure to check on the holes during the drying process.  Wheels were made seperately.  Barbeque skewers were used for the axels and a bit of model magic for the hub caps.  I just loved how they turned out.
