GYOTAKU - Japanese Fish Printing

This is a very simple and fun lesson I did with my 7th graders.

They print their fish molds on a lightweight paper like rice paper or tracing paper using black acrylic paint.

I've tried letting the students chose different colored paints before but for this class it was too much visual mess ... this way is was cleaner and faster for them.

Paint the background in a non-objective watercolor wash.

Stamp the large bubble wrap onto the paper with white paint.  Glue on the fish & add details {like bubble shine marks} with conte crayons.

There are so many ways to complete a fish printing project.  This was just one simple fun way to do it!

Happy Gyotaku-ing :)
